Hindsight is (always) 20/20

数字が特別な意味を持つことはどの言語にもありますが、古今東西「７」がよく使われているようです。
たとえば：

Seven Seas (7つの海)
Seven Wonders of the ancient world（世界の7不思議）

さて本題です。 「ABCニューズシャワー」というTV番組で ‘Hindsight is 20/20’という表現がありました。

• Atlanta’s mayor admits that the city could have staggered the way residents were sent home. Hindsight, of course, 20/20.
  (帰宅時間をずらす措置もとれたと市長も認める。後知恵でしかないが）

20/20 vision*は正常な視力（日本での視力1.0）のことです。
これは欧米で用いられている方式で、分数視力（fractional visual acuity）というそうです。 　
　　　　　　　　　　　　*20フィート離れた1/3インチ径の文字を識別できる視力

• The phrase ‘hindsight is 20/20’ is a reference to looking back on your past mistakes. If you look back on your past with 20/20 vision, you can see things more clearly and more subjectively than when they were actually taking place.
  （後になれば冷静に物事を判断できるが、渦中にいるときは良く見えなくて、冷静になれない）

こんな風にも使われています。

• Jim: “Dad, why did you let me quit my job without interceding?”
  （ジム：どうして僕が仕事辞めると言ったとき、とめてくれなかったの？ ）
  Dad: “Hindsight is 20/20, son, learn from your mistakes.
  （父：その時は分からなかったからね。間違って初めて分かるのさ）
• ’Hindsight is always twenty-twenty.’ (後からは何とでも言える。) 　Billy Wilder.

「後悔先に立たず」とか「下衆 (げす）の後知恵」といった意味ですね。

‘It is easy to be wise after the event.’ 名言ですね。
