Hideboundとは？

hideboundという単語に出会いました。

Unwilling or unable to change because of tradition or convention. (伝統やしきたりに縛られて変えることができない、または変えたくない。)という意味の形容詞です。

日本語の辞書ではこんな風に書かれています。

意味の由来はこうです。

　　　The original reference is to emaciated cattle with skin sticking closely to backbones and ribs; metaphoric sense of “restricted by narrow attitudes” is first recorded 1603. In modern day, hidebound is an adjective used to describe a stubbornly conservative and narrow-minded individual.　(元来は、やせ衰えた牛の背骨やあばらに皮がくっ付いている様をいう形容詞。比喩的に「融通の利かない」という意味で1603年に初めて使われた記録がある。今日hideboundは「かたくなに保守的で心の狭い人」を意味する形容詞として使われる。）

言葉に歴史ありですね。
