「届出人」は英語で何というか？

証明書の「届出」は registrationが一般的です。では「届出人」はどうでしょうか？　 ‘Register’ する人だから ’registrant’ でしょうか？

　　　Face Book でこんな質問を見かけました。 On an application to obtain a copy of a death certificate one of the fields is “Relationship to Registrant”. Who is the Registrant here, the deceased or the person obtaining the certificate?　
（死亡証明書の申請用紙に「Registrantとの続柄」という欄がありますが、Registrantとは誰のことですか？「亡くなった故人」または「証明書の申請人」ですか？）

　　　答えは “Name on Certificate”, obviously the deceased.（証明書にある名前、当然故人）でした。　　

　　

　　　Registrantには ‘one that registers’（登録する人）と ’one that is registered’（登録される人）の両方の意味がありますが、death certificateのregistrantは後者の意味で使われています。ですから「届出人」をregistrant と訳すと、死亡した本人が届けを出したことになってしまうので要注意です。

　　　Registrant は、trademark registrant (トレードマークの申請人)、domain name registrant（ドメインネームを申請する人)という使い方が多く、出生届や死亡届の「届け出人」は専らinformantが使われるようです。

　　　

　　　この他 reporter, notifier なども見られますが、reporterは「記者/報道陣」、notifierはある事実を伝える人「通知する人/通報者」というニュアンスが強いので「役所に届出る人」とは少し違います。

reporter: A person who reports, especially one employed to report news or conduct interviews for the press or broadcasting media

notifierはこんな風に使われています。

• Email notifier/email notification（eメール受信のお知らせ）
• Notifier Fire Systems （米Honeywell社の火災報知システムの名称）

　　　

　　　ちなみに「離婚届け」などの場合は、「申立て人」を applicant, petitioner、相手方である「被申立人」を respondentと言います。「婚姻届」の提出者も applicantです。日本語では同じ「届出人」でも、英語の場合は状況によって意味が違うので要注意ですね。
