A pain in the neck (butt)

　　　以前、論文の英訳をネイティブチェッカーに見てもらった時のこと。
「のどに刺さった骨」を ‘a fishbone in the throat’ としたら
’a thorn in one’s side/flesh’ と直されました。 「脇腹のとげ」とは、やはり生活様式の違い、つまり日本の「魚文化」とヨーロッパの「狩猟文化」の違いでしょうか。

　　　a thorn in one’s side: someone or something that continually causes problems　はこんな風に使われています。

• Your constant questions are a thorn in my side.（君の質問責めには参るなあ）
• Most teachers usually have one student in their class who is a thorn in their side.（ほとんどの教師はクラスに難しい生徒を一人は抱えている）
• The town finds the casino a thorn in its side, even though it brings huge numbers of tourists to the town.　（カジノは町にとって膨大な観光収入源ではあるものの、困った存在でもある。）
• Health inspectors are a thorn in the side of most restaurant owners.（殆どのレストランオーナーにとって衛生管理官の存在は疎ましいものだ）

　　　

　　　念のため ‘a fishbone in the throat’ を検索したら、こんな使い方をされていました。

How do you remove fish-bone stuck in the throat. Drink plenty of water to flush it out from your throat. Eating a bulk of rice, potato or banana can also help remove the fish-bone. （喉に刺さった骨をとるよい方法は？水をたくさん飲んで骨を流し込むか、米や芋やバナナを塊のまま飲み込むのもいいです。）

文字通り「骨が刺さっている」の意味ですね。やはり安直な言葉の置き換えだけでは意味が正しく伝わりません。単語や句が実際にどう使われているかを確認しないといけませんね。

　　　

　　　ついでに、同じような意味の「目の上のたんこぶ」はというと。
a pain in the neck (butt): someone or something that is very annoying が使えそうです。こんな風に使われています。 　

• Joan is a pain in the neck, with her constant complaining.
• Jack told his little brother to stop being a pain in the ass.
• Watering the lawn is always a pain in the butt.

　　　

　　　日本語では喉や目の上が気になる場所であるのに対して、英語では脇腹やお尻や首だったり、面白いなと思いました。生活様式や物事の捉え方・感じ方が、その国の言葉を形作ってきたのだなと実感します。
