Pretty が動詞になる？

New York Timesに載っていた辞書の紹介記事に’pretty up’という言葉を見つけました。
形容詞の”pretty”を動詞として使っています。

• The illustrations are usually put in for a semantic purpose, not just to pretty up the page.

この他こんな使い方も。

• She prettied the cake with icing, sprinkles, and nuts.

名詞の動詞化は他にも色々とありますね。日本語の「お茶する」のような感じでしょうか。

eye, ear, mother, father, doctor, weed, waterなども動詞として使われています。

【eyeが動詞として使われる例】
• They eyed him suspiciously.（疑いの目で見る）
• eye the choices（選択肢をよくよく考える）

•She eyed the other passengers . （彼女は他の乗客を見つめた）

The stock market is eyeing the presidential election.（株式市場は大統領選挙戦を見守っている）
one-eyed daruma（片目のダルマ）

ちなみにearはto form or put forth ears（穂になる、穂を出す）という意味になります。
「穂」はan ear; a head; a spike

「麦の穂が出揃った」は The heads of the wheat are in full ear.　だそうです。

【mother, father が動詞として使われる例 】

ある教育記事の中で「過保護な母親と厳しい父親の不在」を以下のように描いています。

They are being over-mothered and under-fathered, or, perhaps more accurately, overly nurtured, pampered, and protected and under disciplined and under prepared for the real challenges that accompany adulthood.

母親の過保護（over-mothered）に対し、規律や実社会の困難への備えがないことをunder-fathered と言っています。おもしろい表現ですね。

またマイケルジャクソンの３人の子供についてこんな記事を見かけました。

The world inched closer yesterday to a possible answer to a mystery that has stumped some of the keenest gossip minds for more than a decade: Who fathered Michael Jackson’s children?

ここでのfatherの意味は ‘be the source or originator of’ （生産者）です。

同じ意味でこんな風にも使われています。

• a culture which has fathered half the popular music in the world （世界のポピュラー音楽の半分を生み出した文化）
